Planned Giving: Making a Bequest to Creighton

Ever since the will of Mary Lucretia Creighton gave life to the dream of her husband Edward, charitable bequests have been a popular way for people to support Creighton University and its mission.

Your legacy

For Creighton alumni, parents, and friends, the bequest is the most popular type of planned gift. A bequest does not reduce your current income, yet enables you to provide substantial future support for the mission of the University. An estate gift to Creighton has several advantages:

  • Charitable gifts made through your estate are deductible for estate-tax purposes.
  • You may direct your estate gift to the University as an unrestricted gift, or you may direct your estate gift to a specific school or program.
  • You may direct that your estate gift be used to create a permanent endowment to support a specific program or purpose and have the permanent endowment bear your name or someone you wish to honor and remember.
  • When you notify Creighton of your bequest intention, you will be invited to join the Creighton University Heritage Society.

How to word your bequest

You may provide for Creighton by either making a new will, modifying your present will (by adding a codicil), or by including the University in your revocable trust. Your estate planner and you may find the following language helpful:

Specific amount I give and bequeath to Creighton University, a nonprofit corporation located in Omaha, Nebraska, the sum of $_____.

Percentage of estate I give and bequeath to Creighton University, a nonprofit corporation located in Omaha, Nebraska, _____% of my gross estate as determined for estate-tax purposes.

Restricted endowment I give and bequeath to Creighton University, a nonprofit corporation located in Omaha, Nebraska, the sum of $_____ to be used for establishing the John and Betty Smith Endowed Scholarship in the School of Law.

Specific property I give and bequeath to Creighton University, a nonprofit corporation located in Omaha, Nebraska, the following described real/personal property ...

Residual bequest I give and bequeath to Creighton University, a nonprofit corporation located in Omaha, Nebraska, all the rest and residue of my estate.

Your will should be drafted by your own attorney. The Office of Gift and Estate Planning is pleased to consult in confidence with your legal advisor and you about the drafting of any specific bequest.
